What is the main idea of the photography series in the book?
Discover beauty in a situation that did not, in itself, represent an aesthetic tradition.
What is the purpose of these photos?
To show Beauty in a non beautiful situation.
What photography techniques does the photographer use to communicate the main idea?
Hiro believes that "there is no order" and that the photos are not sequential.
I think the lighting makes the photo because this series has the theme of film noir. In film noir, lighting is one, if not, of the most important aspects. In this photograph, the lighting reflects this concept by coming from a side of the photo (left side, slightly higher than the people). Also, the light is not direct, and it instead shines through blinds and a curtain. the curtain diffuses the light and the blinds create the striped effect. the blind effect is seen in many film noir-esque pieces. by doing this type of lighting, it causes the photo to have a type of mysterious and devious emotion. also the light gives the sense of passion in the couple on the right side.
My old roommate has a beautiful Belgian horse named Cyrano and I was lucky enough to tag along during one of her trips to the barn.
Because it was so cloudy at 8 am this morning... i spent most of the time messing around with the white balance...

- as an illustrator, my function is a translator. (create visual metaphors to make it engaging.)

- usually 80% concept and 20% executing
How much research do you do before starting a non personal project?
- tons/ I do as much research as time allows me

- I allow my brain to act as a sieve and filter ideas out.

- knocking on doors available to me
- I had to overcome the fear of rejection that every artist feels after coming out of school.

What does your design studio do?
- serves as a storefront
- right now it is used purely as a workspace

About your drawing of the day project... what motivated you to start?
-2 main reasons:
1. to force self by imposing a regiment to get back into hand done work
2. familiarize / strengthen technical ability.
- after completing the 365 days, will try to sell pieces
- became a slave to the deadline- wanted to make a fake deadline so more pieces could be made for personal benefit and not for non personal work.
- referenced Bob Ross (painter on TV known for the tutorials)

week 6 assignment
Over break... I was sick... and I had really hoped to go take photos in NYC... but clearly it didn't happen. So here are the photos I settled with.
* In my photos... I didn't realize they had a common (excluding the first photo) "orange-ish color" theme until basically.... tonight...

Subject: For this, I used my purple rope lights... and I basically locked me and my quadmate in the bathroom and made people's bladders explode. No big deal.
What is it that interests you about this subject?
• color
• lights are fun to work with

• depending on how they are used, they can be abstract or real
• can create bokeh effect.....I'M OBSESSED.

Shutter speed / Aperture?
- for this assignment- shutter speed was more of a major factor in my case but normally, aperture would dominate importance
What are some good settings to use?
• slow shutter speed
• no flash
• small aperture
1. What motivates you to make photographs? When the motivation is internal, how do you benefit from your photography? If the motivation is external, what results do you hope for?
After 4 years of darkroom photography, I realized that photography was a way for me to understand everything around me. ( I also found it was a way for me to manipulate things I don't like)... in the darkroom sense, of course.
I am a hopeless wanderer, I travel a lot. I was always taught to appreciate various cultures.........I guess thats why I want to volunteer or sell my soul to the IRC one day. My photography is mostly for documenting my travels, and capturing key moments. I do have a lot of the typical touristy photos, but I also have the ones of things people overlook all the time. *I'm really into graffiti. Also, I like having photos of the experiences I have. I went scuba diving back in middle school- so I used a disposable camera with waterproof housing and I took photos from under water. I've always traveled with a camera of some sort, dangerous or not. I even dropped my SLR on a railroad platform and had a fun, yet dangerous adventure of retrieving the lens from the tracks...
I guess in short, I benefit from my photography because It helps me to remember all the amazing things that I have done in my life.
2. What interests and inspires you as an artist in your broader life? For you, what connections are there between what inspires you and your photography?
I'm inspired by people... >I am so sorry I am such a creep<
I guess the connection is that I feel that everything in this whole universe is alive. I really admire and hate the way that people interact with the environment, natural or not. Like I said in my huge clump of words above, I'm a traveler and I volunteer quite a bit. Most of the photos that I take are people being their natural selves. I feel like I'm being so vague, but It is so confusing for me to describe.
Let me try to summarize, I'm really inspired by people and their personalities, I like to see them interact with the environment and capture their natural selves.

The color contrast with the black background really catches my eyes. The water bubble also shows movement and makes the photo interesting. I feel like the graceful movement of the subject is my favorite thing about this photograph. I also really like the symmetry and the framing of the subject. This photo also catches a critical moment. If the picture had been taken a second later, It would be completely different.
